Rio Olympics 2016: Reigning champions Mexico knocked out at group stage
London 2012 champions Mexico failed to reach the quarter-finals of the Olympic men’s football in Rio after losing 1-0 to South Korea.
Kwon Chang-hoon’s stunning strike secured the win for the Koreans, who finished top of Group C.
Argentina were also knocked out at the group stage after a 1-1 draw with Honduras, but Germany progressed after beating Fiji 10-0.
Hosts Brazil play Denmark at 02:00 BST on Thursday and need a win to progress.
The Brazilians, currently second in Group A on two points, have not even scored at the tournament following goalless draws with Iraq and Denmark.
Scoring was not a problem for Germany against Fiji.
SC Freiburg forward Nils Petersen hit five goals, Schalke midfielder Max Meyler grabbed a hat-trick and Arsenal’s Serge Gnabry scored twice as Germany finished second in Group C to set up a last-eight match with Portugal.
The Portuguese finished top of Group D after drawing 1-1 with Algeria in Belo Horizonte.
